MESH SIMPLIFICATION

 

In computer science, a mesh is an object formed of vertices connected to each other with edges or surfaces. This type of topology is used in many domains such as 3D modeling, video games or 3D animation. 

Although we can find meshes with a very small amount of points, most application need very important quantity of data such as a 3D model of character in a Pixar movie. This requires managing a big amount of points that take a lot of computing resources that many systems are unable to provide. It is very interesting in many cases to simplify the mesh to make it lighter by reducing the amount of points but keeping the general shape of the mesh.

Our project is to develop a program capable of reducing the weight of a mesh by simplifying it. We used the algorithm described in the  “Surface simplification using quadric error metrics” article by Michael Garland and Paul Heckbert. We select a number of valid pairs in the mesh and we contract these using the quadric error method.
